Brazil Mixture or Massacre? (1979)

Abdias do Nascimento (March 1914 – May 2011) was a Black thought-leader who truly set the bar for understanding race relations in Brazil and the dynamics of Black life there. This book is a series of essays the explain the contours of the race question in that country. "Miscegenation syndrome" (vii), the conflation of class with race, and social efforts to mainstream Black pride are all topics of conversation that are considered. An avid Pan-Africanist, Nascimento's work here was largely delivered in international settings - principally at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in Nigeria. This book was a pioneering text in the now expansive body of work by Black Brazilian authors who refute Brazil's racial democracy moniker.
